This new codex of business laws, presented May 1, 1577, commissioned by the Grand Duke Francesco of the de Medici family, replaced two older works, the first dated 1393 and its updated version, 1496. The new codex dictated procedures for everyday business transactions and provided a legal guide in the eventuality of litigation.
